How to Compare Functional Coffee: Caffeine, Mushrooms, Collagen & Servings

There are many mushroom coffee brands sold in the United States, and “best” depends on what you value. “Functional coffee” can describe many different formulas. Instead of choosing by marketing language alone, compare what the label actually tells you: caffeine per serving, named mushroom ingredients, serving count, added ingredients, allergens and dietary fit.

JH at a glance: Original lists 16mg caffeine, six mushroom extracts and 40 servings. Energy Kick lists 25mg caffeine, 10 mushroom extracts and 1,900mg bovine collagen peptides per serving.

What is functional coffee?

The term is commonly used for coffee formulas that include additional ingredients beyond coffee itself. Mushroom coffee is one example. Depending on the formula, products may also include MCT ingredients, collagen, L-theanine, taurine or other components.

1. Compare caffeine—not just “energy” language

Caffeine content is measurable. JH Original lists 16mg caffeine per serving, while JH Energy Kick lists 25mg. Other coffees can vary considerably, so compare labels and serving sizes directly.

2. Look for clearly named mushroom ingredients

JH Original contains Lion’s Mane, Cordyceps, Reishi, Chaga, Turkey Tail and Maitake. Energy Kick contains 10 named mushroom extracts: Lion’s Mane, Cordyceps, Chaga, Reishi, Turkey Tail, Maitake, Shiitake, Oyster, Agaricus and Mesima.

3. Compare collagen and other added ingredients

If you specifically want mushroom coffee with collagen, check both the collagen source and stated amount. Energy Kick lists 1,900mg hydrolyzed bovine collagen peptides, 50mg L-theanine and 250mg taurine per serving. Because its collagen is bovine, Energy Kick is not vegan or vegetarian.

4. Compare serving count

Package price does not tell the whole story. JH Original is a 200g pouch with 40 servings. Energy Kick is a 100g pouch with 20 servings. Serving count helps put package size and price into context.

5. Check allergens and dietary fit

Also check sugar: JH Original lists 0g total sugar and 0g added sugar per serving. JH Original contains coconut and is vegan. Energy Kick contains bovine collagen and therefore is not vegan or vegetarian. Always use the current product label when dietary fit or allergens matter.

Two distinct JH rituals

Original: lower-caffeine JH formula • 16mg caffeine • six mushroom extracts • 40 servings.

Energy Kick: 25mg caffeine • 10 mushroom extracts • 1,900mg bovine collagen peptides.
